Blood Glucose And Hba1c Test
The Blood Glucose and HbA1c tests are essential tools for diagnosing and managing diabetes, as they provide valuable insights into an individual’s blood sugar levels and long-term glucose control.
1. Blood Glucose Test
The blood glucose test measures the current level of glucose (sugar) in the blood at a specific point in time. It is commonly used to diagnose diabetes, monitor blood sugar levels, and manage diabetes treatment.
Types of Blood Glucose Tests:
- Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG): This test measures blood sugar after fasting for at least 8 hours. It is typically used to diagnose diabetes or prediabetes.
- Random Blood Glucose: A blood test taken at any time of the day, regardless of when the last meal was consumed. This test is often used to diagnose diabetes if symptoms like excessive thirst, frequent urination, and unexplained weight loss are present.
- Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): This test involves fasting overnight and then drinking a sugary solution. Blood glucose levels are tested two hours later to see how well the body processes sugar.
Normal Range (fasting):
- Normal: 70-99 mg/dL (3.9-5.5 mmol/L)
- Prediabetes: 100-125 mg/dL (5.6-6.9 mmol/L)
- Diabetes: 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher
Postprandial (after meal):
- Normal: Less than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) two hours after eating.
- Prediabetes or diabetes: Higher levels may indicate impaired glucose tolerance or poor blood sugar control.
